Press release: 24 March 2014

A first for the island – hypnobirthing classes for expectant mums now available

A brand new venture and exciting step forward for expectant Isle of Wight parents has now launched. Birth Wight offers hypnobirthing classes for pregnant mums and their birthing partners; courses start in May 2014. Places on the course are limited to only five mums-to-be and their birthing partners.

This brand new concept for island mums-to-be provides a 10 hour, four week course delivering The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme, a complete antenatal hypnobirthing programme promoting positive birth. Mums also receive a handbook and five hypnosis MP3s.

Enquiries received before 30 March 2014 (Mother's Day) will also receive a 10% launch discount, once booking is confirmed. Quote MSPR14 when enquiring.

An information evening will take place at Wootton Community Centre on 24 April 2014, at 7.30pm. Interested mums-to-be can meet Helen Wheller, the Director of Birth Wight, to find out more about how they can achieve the right birth for themselves and their babies.

The programme teaches pregnant women and their birthing partners the importance of changing their outlook on birth and how to achieve this with simple and sensible techniques. It teaches mums-to-be how to become experts in relaxation to enable their bodies to birth efficiently, saving energy, promoting endorphins and reliving anxiety, to be able to approach their birthing day with joy, excitement and expectation; not just to meet their babies but to experience their birth, without fear or dread.

“Birth is a natural and normal process, and can be a pain-free and positive experience,” says Helen Wheller, Director of Birth Wight and hypnobirthing mum of two.

“However, convincing people of this can often be difficult. The myth that birth has to be 'painful' is deeply routed in the psyche of modern mums-to-be, often making them dread their labour from the day they find out they're pregnant!

“Hypnobirthing teaches that there is another way to approach birth; a positive way. By changing her outlook on birth with The Wise Hippo techniques, a mum-to-be can approach her labour day calmly and confidently, ensuring that she achieves the right birth for her and her baby on the day.

“I know this, because I've done it myself. I've had two pain-free births, both different and one very medically managed due to pregnancy complications. But both were beautiful, positive and empowering experiences that will fill me with joy for the rest of my life; not just because of the perfect children that I birthed, but because I birthed them in such a positive way!”

Hypnobirthing

The term hypnobirthing refers to the practice of the use of hypnotherapy techniques to alleviate the fear associated with childbirth, enabling a pregnant woman to relax and trust her body to perform the act of birth as it was intended ,and as her body is primed to do.

Hypnobirthing utilises relaxation tools to relax the body and in turn the mind, as well as eduction to retrain the subconscious to belief in a positive birth outcome. Understanding what motivates fear and undertaking new learning, means that a woman can be no longer anxious or frightened of birth, but look forward with excitement and anticipation not only of the arrival of her new baby, but to the birth process itself.

The impact of fear of childbirth upon a labouring woman is what causes first fear, then tension and physiologically the body tightens, essential oxygen is removed from the muscles of the uterus, creating pain in these overworked muscles and thus contributing to the notion that childbirth is painful.

Whereas, a uterus that is enabled to work, as indeed any other muscle in the body does; when it can do this job without anxiety, it can do its job creating no pain, only sensation and pressure to the labouring mother, who understands and acts with the process of birth.

The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme

The only UK specific hypnobirthing programme, The Wise Hippo brings new learning, modern resources and support documents, with a relaxing theme of the sea running throughout.

We believe a ‘good birth’ is a state of mind, it’s not defined by what happens during labour and birth but by how a woman feels about her baby’s birth. Because of this belief we are able to teach skills and knowledge that empower women to trust their instincts and ensure that their baby has the right birth on the day.

Created by experienced hypnobirthing practitioners Tamara Cianfini (qualified nurse, hypnobirthing mum and instructor) and Dany Griffiths (qualified hypnotherapist, hypnobirthing mum and instructor), the programme was launched nationally in 2013, and is now delivered by over 100 hypnobirthin instructors in the UK, Europe and Australia.

The programme provides factual antenatal information, alongside the tools required to achieve a calm and positive birth. Couples received five hypnobirthing MP3s, a handbook and a variety of skills and techniques that are delivered either in group or individual classes by a train Wise Hippo Instructor.

The first cohort of new instructors completed their training in March 2014, which will bring the programme to even more expectant mums and their birthing partners.
