The stats are in...and as we know, The Wise Hippo birthing programme works!

The Wise Hippo birthing programme, that we at Birth Wight teach, turned 2 (happy birth day) in May.  As part of our processes, we follow up on every birth and ensure that our clients are achieving what they set out to - the right birth on the day, with a positive experience for mum, birthing partner, and baby.  And, nationally our statistics prove that the programme works...100% feedback that our clients achieved their goals, proves this.

That's not to say that every birth is the 'perfect' birth.  We all set out on our birthing journey with an ideal in mind; but, as we encourage our clients to recognise, every pregnancy, every baby, every birth is different.  Our clients are equipped with skills and knowledge to manage that eventuality if their birth takes a different path, and their skills enable them to still achieve a good birth experience no matter what turn their birthing takes.  Take our clients Sally and Mark for example, they had planned home water birth, but baby Jack had other ideas.  He was born by emergency Caesarean Section in February, they said of their birth: "The Wise Hippo birthing programme made us more aware of what our choices were so we felt more in control, had we have not felt like this, it could have been a very traumatic experience."

That said, 83%% mums delivered vaginally using The Wise Hippo (TWH) birthing programme, nationally, compared to 73% who didn't prepare with our programme.  On the island, 95% mums birthed vaginally, that's 1 in 20 of what, according to national statistics 'should' have been 5 of our 20 to have a C-Section! Add to this that 72% of TWH mums birthed with no intervention.  On the island, 78% CHOSE no assistance (because it is a choice and our parents know how to make these informed decisions confidently and knowledgeably).

84% of Birth Wight mums went into spontaneous labour too. AND 80% of Birth Wight mums birthed 'drug free', calmly, comfortably and confidently.  We had 8 waterbirths (of 20 throughout the year) and 3 home births (that's 15% compared to the national average of 2.3% and The Wise Hippo rate is 18%).

The shortest labour from a Birth Wight mum was our most recent; Anne-Marie birthed daughter Philomena after just 70 minutes of active labour, narrowly pipping one of our first babies Ava, to mum Sara-Kate, whose birth was completed in a little over an hour and 20 minutes!

We had 11 girls and 9 boys - so, pretty even going there!

Helen Wheller, Director at Birth Wight, said: "We are very proud of The Wise Hippo birthing programme, but also all of our proud, courageous and truly amazing clients who trusted us, trusted the programme and trusted themselves, proving that birth can indeed be a positive experience!"
